Modern Gadgets in Your Car, Convenience or Inconvenience?

Let's face it.  We are all spoiled.  We have come a very long way from utilizing a Mapsco book to get us from where we are to where we are going.  So many vehicles these days are equipped with GPS systems, high functioning stereo systems that work with our cell phones and more buttons and gadgets than any of us can use on the way to Grandma's house for Sunday dinner.

However, even though we may not use so many of the features that are built into our vehicles, we certainly like to buy our cars with all of the bells and whistles.  Who doesn't right?  Considering here in South Texas where you can wear shorts 90% of the year, I need seat warmers, right?

Well, as fun as all of these great gadgets and conveniences are, they come with a price!  All of these new buttons that come on your car draw off from the electrical system in your car.  Like anything else, if it doesn't have the right amount of electricity it cannot run properly.  However, very few vehicles will just shut down your accessories when there is a problem, they just allow your electrical systems to be robbed of power and this can cause major electrical issues with the truly important systems on your car such as your transmission, fuel injection and traction control.   The first time your transmission stops shifting are you still going to need that GPS system?  Nope... you aren't going very far in that car, it is going to the shop!

When you think that you have a major concern with your vehicle, don't panic.  We have seen lots of cars in the shop in the past few months that are owned by people who are totally freaking out because they feel like they have just been doomed by major car repair expenses.  In many cases, the major problem that they think they are experiencing is simply a voltage issue in the vehicle that can be remedied by a new battery and/or alternator.

However, running your vehicle for extended periods of time with voltage or charging issues can cause damage to various systems in your vehicle.  I recently had a customer that the stereo/gps unit in their vehicle had completely shorted out and a replacement unit was nearly $2,000!  This is where proactive car ownership is totally necessary.  Take the time to have your vehicle checked out regularly.  When you have it done, make sure your battery and charging system are being properly checked, that way you are not seeing red when you are left on the side of the road by your car!  Remember, most major repairs can be avoided by simply allowing your vehicle to be properly maintained by a professional that is familiar with your driving habits, the climate and your particular manufacturer.

Call a professional wherever you are for great vehicle maintenance.  If you are in the San Antonio area, call us at Select Transmission & Automotive Center at 210-599-9958 or look us up online at www.sanantoniotransmissions.net

  1. I think all the gadgets are just a distraction. I have a hard enough time getting my transmission working. I feel like it would just be more stuff to worry about.

  2. I would really be nice if I could fix my own transmission. It would take a lot of training for me to learn about cars. The engine would be the hardest to repair for me because of the wires. http://www.satrans.com

  3. I am lucky that I have always had someone good with cars to help me. When I was younger my dad would always take care of my car troubles. Now that I am older my husband fixes my problems.

  5. I think it is necessary to have the new gadgets in your car. They all are to help you take care of you car better and know what is going on. I know for instance there are some gadgets that allow you to check out how your transmission is doing and let you know if you need to find a shop to repair it or not. I would love to have that because you can save your car from breaking down often.

  6. I never knew that modern transmissions were so complicated. I have driven a manual ever since I was in high school, and I can fix that with my eyes closed. There are just so many changes in technology that I can't keep up with all of them. http://www.interstatetransmission.net

  7. My family and I are taking a vacation to Disneyland this summer but our car is pretty old and has a lot of miles on it. For us since there is so many children in my family and flying would be too expensive the only option for us is driving but we first need to have a transmission checked or possibly even replaced. I am actually just really excited to spend some quality time with my family. http://www.brightonauto.com/Repairs__Service_and_Parts.html

  8. I was actually thinking about this very thing the other day while I was driving. I have a nice stereo system, heated seats, a gps, and so many other gadgets that help me get to where I need to be and make my driving experience comfortable. I think it's awesome, and cant wait to see what they come up with in the next decade.

  9. I agree it's important to have your vehicle checked regularly. In fact, not that long ago I took my car in to be checked because of some problems I was having with it and it turns out my transmission needed some repair work done. It's important to take care of these things sooner rather than later.

  10. My transmission in my truck is giving me this really annoying clicking noise that I can't stand. I don't know what it is, but I don't want to break down in the middle of the road while driving it. I would really like to get it checked out soon. Any ideas on what it could be? http://www.albertatransmission.ca/en/

  11. There are benefits to having gadgets in the car. Though I have yet to own a car that has all the bells and whistles. Maybe in the future with my next car it will happen.

  12. Thanks for the article. I have a 06 Nissan Pathfinder, and had a similar issue as the article mentioned.
"In many cases, the major problem is simply a voltage issue that can be remedied by a new battery and/or alternator." After finding the right mechanic, I had this issue repaired simply by getting a new alternator. http://ptransmissions.com/

  13. Great article! I would love to own a car with such equipment. I won't ever have a problem with over voltage and need to get a new transmission. Nevertheless, the car that I own is so old that it might need to get a new transmission. http://www.rigsbysautosalvage.com

  14. Transmission repair can save you from having to replace the whole thing, Hanna. Someone who can figure out the differentials on my car would be nice. I want to access the extra torque my engine puts out, but do it with lower RPM. precisetransmission.com

  15. I think that some of the newer gadgets in our cars make them less of a convenience to use. How many buttons do I now have to push to change the radio station? My car has been acting funny on me. Who knows what is wrong with the transmission this time. There is so many things that can go wrong on these new cars. I should take it in for some transmission repair soon. http://www.macystruckrepair.com

  16. I'm glad to hear that this is a common issue. My transmission has started to give me problems as of late. It is getting close to the 200k mileage range and has done great. It's time to get it changed though from the sound of it. I'm sure a transmission specialist could tell me for certain. http://www.unlimitedservice.us

  17. Transmission repair is something that takes a lot of work. That is why it is so expensive. The transmission is placed at the heart of a car. In order to get to it you must dig through the vehicle and find it. Taking it out is even more difficult than locating it. This whole process can take hours.

  19. No matter how new your vehicle is, you always want to make sure that you get regular check ups on your vehicle and get repairs when they are needed. I didn't when I new that I needed to get transmission repairs and it ended up ruining my vehicle's transmission. Because of that I had to get the entire thing replaced and that was quiet a bit of money. I really wish I would have listened to them and gotten it repaired.

  20. My friend was telling me that he needed to replace his car's transmission. He said that his car was already old, but that still it's in good condition. I heard that when the car gets too old, many of its parts tend to have problems. It seems to me that it's necessary to replace the main parts of the vehicle more frequently to keep having the car in a good driving condition.
