Holiday Traveling
Before you hit the road for your holiday travels, think about a few things that could make your travel a lot more efficient and a lot safer.
1: Know Before You Go!
If you are crossing state lines, know about the speed limits and traffic laws of the states through which you are going to travel. Being from out of state, sometimes a traffic ticket can cost you a lot of time, money and trouble. It won't take but a few minutes to research the laws about speed limits, radar detectors and things like that. Remember, in some areas it is even illegal to have things hanging from your rear view mirror!
2: Get a Free Vehicle Inspection
Lots of places, including Select Transmission & Automotive in San Antonio, offer free vehicle inspections. This will allow you to know that your vehicle is really road worthy before you hit the road. Everyone jokes that road trips are no fun with kids in the car, but, can you imagine how bad they would be if you were left stranded on the side of the road with kids. A free inspection from Select Transmission & Automotive in San Antonio or from your local repair shop could save you a lot of aggrivation and time and money.
3: Change Your Oil and Check Your Tires!
A vehicle running on the correct oil and with tires that are properly inflated can increase your fuel economy a lot more than what you might imagine. An oil change is not expensive and checking the air in your tires certainly is not that big of an inconvenience. Also, when you stop for fuel on your journey, take a moment and check that tire pressure again!
4: Be Familiar With Where You Are Going!
Lets be real, it is 2012, and most of us don't leave our comfort zone without some sort of GPS. However, think of the worst case scenario, what if your GPS stops working for some reason. It won't hurt to have a back-up copy of your travel plans printed out from your favorite mapping website like Mapquest.com or maps.google.com. Take the 5 minutes to have your back-up ready. Who wants to argue about being lost with the husband or wife. (wives, you can do this without telling your husband, it might be better to do so in order to protect the ego!)
5: Clean Up Your Ride
A clean car runs better, right? Well, there is no proof of that, but I think so. However, a nice clean car will be much more comfortable anyways. Do you really need the extra drink cups and half eaten packages of chips? Taking all that extra stuff out of the car will not only make traveling much more comfortable but, it will give you and your family some extra room to move around the cabin!
6: Slow Down
Driving at slower highway speeds will actually increase your fuel economy. Reducing your speed by 5-10 miles an hour can increase your fuel economy by 5-10%. Also, a lower long term engine speed is much easier on your vehicle. Also, keep in mind, when driving unfamiliar roads, if an emergency situation comes up, the slower you are travelling, the easier it is to manage the emergency.

The phone rings at my transmission shop almost constantly. Don’t get me wrong, a ringing phone is a good thing and nobody appreciates a ringing phone more than I do.
I have a strict policy at my shop – and that is that we always do a preliminary diagnostic service for our customers at no charge. We pride ourselves on this. It is no hassle, no commitment and of course comes with no strings attached.
A trend that has started here recently is people truly believing that there is a “catch” involved in the free diagnostic service. Admittedly, I have not shopped the competition in a long time, but, from the calls I am getting, I believe that many shops are starting to charge for the diagnostic.
So, the next question is generally goes something like this; “Jeff, why do you give away the diagnostic service, aren’t you losing money?”
The honest answer is this: the free diagnostic service is much like the super discounted televisions during the holiday shopping season. I know that if I give a customer a reason to come to my shop versus another shop that my service, my staff and our professionalism will shine above what most customers have experienced in the past and with that, most customers will want to do business with me now or sometime in the future.
I have confidence in my staff and with the service that we provide. San Antonio has spoken as well, and they are happy with the transmission service and general automotive services that we provide. We have excellent reviews and a large majority of my business is repeat and referral business. With those two facts alone, I know that we are doing things right.
If you need transmission repair in San Antonio or just a great mechanic, be sure to consider Select Transmission and Automotive. We are proudly offer great pricing, excellent service and have a commitment to quality.

Cost or Quality.. The Age Old Question
In automotive repair, and in many industries, there are always options in choosing the service that you receive.
It is very simple. If you want a hamburger, sometimes you decide that a dollar menu burger will suffice and sometimes you need something gourmet with huge pricetag. Both are hamburgers, but, there is a difference in the experience. One will leave you much more satisfied than the other. You can agree, right?
The same is true in the automotive repair industry. In most cases we can access the catolog of multiple parts manufacturers. Most of the time the parts will function identically upon installation, usually, the only difference is the long term operation of the part.
As the customer, you should have the final say so. What is more important to you? Long term operation or getting back on the road at the least possible price.
Remember, you do have options, and if your mechanic is not giving you options, you need to ask yourself why.
If you have questions about your repair, need a quote on a repair or want to meet a great bunch of folks commited to making your repair experience and comfortable and pleasurable as possible, call us at Select Transmission and Automotive in San Antonio. We pride ourselves in providing high quality repairs at affordable prices.

It seems like just yesterday that we originally opened the doors at Select Transmission & Automotive. We are proud to be one of the fastest growing transmission and automotive repair shops on the North East side of San Antonio.
As the owner, it is my responsibility to continually ask myself "What makes us different from everyone else?"
In continually asking that question, I am able to always make sure that when you deal with Select Transmission & Automotive you are able to expect service and quality that you don't expect when dealing with other repair shops. We pride ourselves in the level of service that we give to our customers. We pride ourselves on the quality of repairs that we send out the door. We do these things every single day. I expect everyone that works for me to perform that personal inventory on every project that they complete.
While I have high expectations as the owner of the shop, I also understand that we are not - and cannot be perfect. Nobody is perfect in anything that they do. In accepting that, I can expect myself, and everyone that works for me, to embrace and learn from our mistakes. If we learn from a mistake and do everything that we can do to make sure that we fix it as quickly as humanly possible, it is ok to make them every once in a while. (By all means, I am not encouraging mistakes!)
In choosing to deal with Select Transmission and Automotive you can expect the highest level of customer care, technicians that care about what they are doing and a staff that truly cares about your opinion.
I hope that you have the most positive experience possible when working with Select Transmission and Automotive, and please, if you feel like something is not right, call me directly, or email me at jeff@sanantoniotransmissions.net and let me make it right for you.

Avoiding Scams In Transmission Repair

Lets face it, transmission repairs are something that most people completely hate thinking about. It is very important to consider a shop that offers quality repairs at a fair price.
Here are some things to strongly consider when searching for a transmission repair facility.
1. Ask your friends and neighbors who they might have had dealings with in the past. Generally, they will quickly tell you if they had a good experience.
2. Avoid Low Ballers! Sources for quality parts are limited. If you are given a price that is remarkably lower that the average, this is cause for alarm. There is a good chance that the price will go up throughout your transaction with that shop or you will get your vehicle back with a repair that is less than satisfactory.
3. Check for training and certificates -- I don't want to imply that a certificate is a sign that one tech is better than the other, however, certifications are a pretty clear sign that the technicians have proven their commitment to furthering their education and that they display professionalism; these are traits you want from your repair facility.
4. Ask for a detailed written estimate -- After checking your car, the shop should have a good idea about what is really happening with your vehicle. They should be willing to give you a written estimate for repairs.
5. Look For Membership In Consumer Organizations -- Most reputable shops are affiliated with organizations like ATRA that provide the consumer with help in the event of a dispute.
6. Look For A Professional Appearance -- A clean and organized shop is a key indicator of a professional attitude.
These are some ideas of ways to look for the most qualified shop to work on your vehicle. From major transmission repairs to minor services, you need to have faith in who you are working with. A healthy car that you can depend on requires a partnership between the vehicle owner and their mechanic.
